Thoughts And Prayers: Sandy Hook School Shooting

Map of Northeast
Joined with millions of others across America, our hearts go out to the elementary school children, parents, and staff reeling from the shooting this morning at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown Connecticut.  Today children saw their friends and teachers gunned down in a horrifying tragedy.

Timeline: School Violence in United States.

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
and bring you home again.
No farewell words were spoken
no time to say goodbye
you were gone before I knew it,
and only God knows why.
My heart still aches in sadness
and secret tears still flow,
what it meant to lose you,
no one will ever know.

As the death count reaches 26, and parents try to comfort terrified children, the scale of this tragedy hits home--particularly near as we are to Columbine High School here in Colorado. We realize how fragile and how important are the connections within our communities. Each of us can ask ourselves today what we can do, in our communities to build resilience, strength, and connection.

Remember the emergency responders, too, they have an unbearable task today.
